LUCE.OMBRA: a play of light and shadow

Light and shadow are among the fundamental themes in my artistic work – and have always fascinated ATARA. In the LUCE.OMBRA collection, they form the starting point for a contemporary design of cement tiles: geometric lines, surfaces and shapes reflect the dynamic interplay of light and shadow that inspired me to create these designs.

Tradition meets contemporary design

Every LUCE.OMBRA cement tile is handcrafted in Morocco, always by the same artisan, to ensure there are no variations within the batch. The precise patterns range from fine linear structures to two-dimensional geometric compositions of clean rectangles.

A carefully coordinated colour palette of muted violet, various shades of grey, ecru, petrol and shades of pink is complemented by contrasting black. Depending on the angle of the light, individual shapes stand out against the colours, whilst others recede – transforming the wall or floor into an ever-changing surface.

The individual tiles open up a wide range of possibilities: different laying patterns can emphasise, add rhythm to or deliberately break up the geometric structures. This results in unique compositions for walls and floors that blend architecture and surfaces.

Craftsmanship with a history

LUCE.OMBRA is also a tribute to the centuries-old tradition of the cement tile. Its history dates back to the mid-19th century, when the first industrially manufactured cement tiles were produced in the south of France around 1850. From there, the technique spread and developed into a design element prized worldwide.

In Morocco, this unique craftsmanship is still preserved and refined to this day. The combination of natural materials, traditional production methods and precise handcrafting makes every tile a unique piece.

A classic reimagined

What was once found primarily as a classic floor covering in ‘Gründerzeit’ buildings is now enjoying a resurgence in popularity. Contemporary patterns, minimalist colour palettes and new laying techniques give the traditional cement tile a modern expression. The collection of 4 patterns in 10 coordinated colours was designed exclusively for Lavisio and is also available via Zementfliesen.at.

With LUCE.OMBRA, ATARA reinterprets this classic. Traditional craftsmanship and contemporary design enter into a dialogue – creating surfaces that not only shape a space but also interact with it and its light.
